Life, death and multi-holed tori
Maryam Mirzakhani is dead. She died in California where I studied mathematics (I was at Berkeley). As a student, I tried to get my head round elementary aspects of the sort of geometry about which she was later to prove amazing things. An on-going mathematical challenge is to relate the topology of a shape with various structures that it can support.
Some non-equivalent paths on a 3-holed torus; they are not smooth paths as they follow the cracks in the crumbling play-dough.
An array of items: seen before images, tori with 'straight lines', broken pots and non-trivial loops, a 'pair of pants' and 'savasana'.
